Many have seen me around the parish before but allow me to formally introduce myself. I am Rev. Anthony Tuong Duy Nguyen.
I was originally from Saigon, Vietnam and came to the U.S. in July 1980 with the whole family to reunite with my father, who escaped to the U.S. earlier after the Fall of Saigon in 1975. My parents have 7 boys and 3 girls, and I am the fifth.
After I graduated with a B.A. degree in psychology at the University of San Diego, I joined St. Francis Seminary in San Diego in 1992 in the pre-theology program, then moved on to St. Patrick Seminary in Menlo Park for theology training and was ordained a priest by Bishop McGrath on May 27, 2000. My first two assignments were at Holy Family Parish (three years) and St. Patrick Proto-Cathedral (8 years). After that, I went on sabbatical in Rome for a program in the spring of 2011. Next, I was assigned to St. Simon Parish for two years and Christ the King for three years. I had a stroke on October 17, 2013 due to high blood pressure medicine. Thanks be to God, I miraculously recovered and returned to ministry on February 1, 2014. I moved to St. Maria Goretti Parish for 2 years and then to St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in Palo Alto for a year.
I was placed on medical leave for a year, but I agreed to postpone it to take a temporary assignment at St. Joseph of Cupertino while waiting for a replacement. However, things changed, and after much prayer and reflection, I decided to forego my medical leave and agreed to take a regular assignment to serve the people of God at St. Joseph of Cupertino and the hospital ministry at Kaiser Santa Clara.
Please, pray for more vocations to the priesthood and religious life. The Church needs more good priests. My younger brother, Rev. Anthony Tan Nguyen, is also a priest for the Diocese of San Jose. Please, pray for us, that we may have the zeal to serve God's people and to be faithful in our vocation to the priesthood.
